Looked over your sub site (is that it?) and can’t find one reference to anything that could be conceived as relevant to today. I wouldn’t go as far as to argue your artists and labels are irrelevant but what about all the great stuff that’s coming out now. No Jon Batiste, no Olivia Rodrigo. No superstars like Bruno Mars. Surely the site isn’t rooted in the past.
Can’t you update it to reflect the current scene rather than simply celebrate the past?
Wow, two questions in less than a week – things are really hotting up round here!!!
This is a touchy one though. My immediate response was to ‘flame the troll’ so to speak. But then I quickly guessed that every generation behaves in precisely the same way to their antecedents and I assume that Alan is a case in point. So, I will succinctly point out that, whilst I can also freely and of sound mind admit to many a disagreement with my older generations, I never lost my love for those artists who made everything else possible. So, whilst in my time I could listen to and love the Ramones, I never lost a liking for B.B. King or Bobby Bland or Aretha Franklin. Therefore I won’t diss Alan’s choices, other than to reiterate my strongest objections to using the term R&B (that’s rhythm and blues for crying out loud) to identify their musical genre. My only other point is to amplify that this sub site, however misguided it might be, is about rhythm and blues artists. Hence, hopefully, this is the answer as to why Alan’s example artists will never grace these pages (and why artists like the incredible Ramones will likewise not be present), however relevant they may be.
