Three railway journeys, excellent scenery and it didn’t rain (well, not much anyway). Pretty good way to get a taste of the area for the first time….
Went from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh – lovely run, finishing in Kyle and overlooking Skye from the (very small) harbour
The Strathspey Steam Railway only runs just under 10 miles but it’s a quality run, starting out at Aviemore. The latter is a little bit nondescript, as to be expected for a town built largely for the walkers in summer and the skiers in winter. Cairngorm mountain railway well worth the admission price, with the added bonus of sun at the summit!
The Fort William to Mallaig run was probably the favourite, 42 miles of almost unbroken and often dramatic views. Mallaig a pleasant village and harbour. Kipper Smokey closed though, so no kippers through the post.
Overall, pleasant little break, but the less said about the hotel the better. Wouldn’t recommend to my dearest enemy, but no details provided as I’m now on restricted means (i.e. retired) can’t afford any nasty libel actions – but mixed vegetables out of a tin, furniture that would have been retro in 1970 and a lounge used in a TV series to represent a residential home for the elderly! Need I day more. Oops, a few details slipped out…..
