Murray and the Slams (Part Two)!

Have to feel for Murray at Wimbledon – incredible expectation, especially after England’s woeful exit from the World Cup, and always two of the potentially all time greats to overcome. Certainly didn’t go out with the whimper that betrayed the true worth of our footballing heroes.

In the end, against Nadal, it came down to the odd critical point. Seems a little odd to say, given he was beaten in straight sets, but I think it’s fair. He was beaten by the better player, but it was just fractions. He served well, he was more aggressive and his overall levels were consistently high. But to win a grand slam now you simply have to play the key points well – a set point on serve in the tie-break, a break up in the third and serving, these are the crucial stages of a match that Nadal and Federer (usually) always seem to be able to make. It seems that Murray has the talent to break the grip of these two, does he have the will, temperament and bit of luck to make the most of those key moments in the match? If not, he will possibly finish his career with the dubious accolade as one of the most talented tennis players never to win a grand slam title (and, in fairness, better than many who have).
