As United snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it’s hard for any United fan to remain optimistic, especially as there was almost a sad inevitability about the results yesterday. It’s a hard old life supporting this club……leaving the Premier league under harsh circumstances on the last day of the season and now this.
Ok, so it’s not over yet. we could still come through the play-offs. But yesterday was the day to make it happen. We were the home team, Wednesday had a difficult away tie, it was ours to lose – so we did!.
In fairness, if you take a look at our form against the top six in the division, it’s close to pathetic. Playing the big teams and the big matches, we seem to choke. Wednesday won a tough match away from home when they needed the win, we conceded two sloppy goals and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. Sad to say, and it pains me to say it, Wednesday probably deserve the automatic promotion spot.
Delivering when it matters in any sport is critical. we seem to engage in either heroic failure or meek capitulation. Yet it still won’t stop us hoping as the play-offs get underway. (And no, there won’t be a remarkable turnaround next Saturday….)
