Another Sunday evening at the Riverside last night for the latest in the Riverside Nights series. A very entertaining interview with the talented Mr. Gatiss, covering everything from his early life in the North East, his time at the Edinburgh fringe, through to his varied TV successes such as The League of Gentlemen, Dr. Who and, of course, Sherlock. His film choice for the evening was Powell and Pressburger’s “A Canterbury Tale“, which was a typically idiosyncratic choice. A Chaucer influenced film in its broadest sense, the idea of three characters on a loosely religious pilgrimage, with all three eventually receiving the blessing they craved, wasn’t actually that weird, although the main whodunit plot device of the mysterious “glue-man”, who pours glue on the hair of girls dating soldiers after dark was certainly unusual! Enjoyable, put possibly a little long at two hours and with a basic plot device that managed to be quite flimsy and captivating at the same time.
