Welcome to ‘Musings’…

Just a vehicle for the odd ramble or two, the most recent first (OK, apart from this introduction). Well, it keeps me out of trouble. It’s also a useful way to remember what we actually did last week, year or decade – an antidote to the senior moments! So, occasional entries may or may not be posted here on anything from holidays, sport, music, theatre, cinema or……..

Looking Back…

We were so much younger then

This is a very specific post, aimed fairly and squarely in the direction of Mrs. No. Name, largely in response to her not too infrequent accusatory remarks that we haven’t really been anywhere. So, apologies to the vast general readership (oh the irony) but unless travel and lists are your thing, this one isn’t really for you…

An Easter Story

Or in this case, a trip to Sunderland last week to visit S&G that did not include catsitting duties, although it is still sad to report that any such future tasks will be to support two cats following the sad demise of the second of the older twins after more than twenty years of domestic ‘harmony’. Also, when I say Easter at Sunderland, it was more a three day break in the middle of a longer break with visits to Easby and Richmond on the way up and Baslow and the Peak District on the way back.

Doo-Wop Dilemma

On a roll now with posts that are R&B related but can still find a place in the main musings section of this site. Well, no-one said I couldn’t include a little contemporaneous R&B material and post it on the main site without detracting from the older R&B material I ported over from the old Shades Of Blue website of yester year. So, along with the previous post, here comes another one.

The ‘Black Country’!

No, the title is not a reference to the deep, dark and somewhat disappointing direction that the country has taken – although given the recent, traditional tropes more usually associated with a right of centre party but now apparently adopted by a supposedly socialist (or even social democratic) government, one might be forgiven if this article was little more than an excuse for a conspiratorial rant – but we’re better than that! So no, this is simply a brief and hopefully more aesthetically pleasing meditation on the sometimes quite pronounced overlap of black artists and country music!

Recalcitrant Returner

Not usually an event important enough to warrant inclusion on this esteemed and exciting musings extravaganza. On this occasion however, I thought I would add it to the site as a lesson in how often we fail to return to locations after what might only be an initial cursory visit. The Railway Inn in Westerfield is one such establishment. I visited over twenty five years …

The Heythrop Hypocrite

Hang’em High
Heythrop House
Heythrop House

Absolutely disgusting behaviour – hail the French Revolution and reintroduce the guillotine I hear you cry. Well as you know, I’ve always been a little conflicted by the Warners concept, as indeed I have by the poor relation that is Center Parcs. As I’ve probably mentioned before (I can’t be arsed to actually check), Warners specialise in large historic properties that have been upgraded and, significantly, added to with a swathe of more modern accommodation.

Rushed But Not Radical

Only booked three days or thereabouts before departure, so a ‘rushed’ reservation, but a two night break at the Wentworth Hotel is certainly not ‘radical’ as we have stayed there many times before. It was however disconcerting to note that our last visit was around two years ago. Far too long a gap before a return visit to our favourite Aldeburgh abode.

And To Emphasise The Point…

Of the previous post of course, obviously!! If you check the Latest R&B Primer News on the homepage you will see there are five new entries to the R&B Artists Section. The aim is to get it up to twenty in total, which is still far less than the R&B Booklet but is a nice round number for the stripped down Primer itself – hope you agree that this is an acceptable compromise ⚖️

Site Enhancements

Well, I say enhancements, others should really be the judge of that. Ignoring the huge wave of indifference, I have just tried to simplify access to any new material that I might add to the R&B Primer, whilst holding to the rationale that anything ported over from the old Shades of Blue should retain the original date stamp showing the time it was first created.

Local but Lovely

A special birthday for lovely Mrs. No Name but as I rather reluctantly had a hospital eye clinic appointment (all clear by the way) on the birthday morning, I decided on a very local overnight birthday celebration. Been to the award winning Seckford Hall before so we were interested to see how it was shaping up. Unusually just a standard room booking as we wanted to ensure we were in the main building; as you can hopefully see from the collage, it’s an historic hall ( built 1535ish) and the standard rooms reflect its age, with room doors stretching back over 400 years and décor to match (in a good way).

Forget the Rhythm….

Apparently, it’s all about the blues!! I should have seen it coming but I’m no clairvoyant (although it does sound a tad like a blues song I think). Following the last post, @ForeverBlues decided a blues variation of the theme would be most welcome. Now, I’m really a fan of the R&B genre because by definition and, unsurprisingly, it covers both the ‘rhythm and the blues‘! Be that as it may, I’m still partial to the more straight forward musical form and have included a number of blues performers in both the original, long gone Shades of Blue website and on the cut down version that appears on the stripped down The R&B Primer (and in the booklet, to be absolutely clear).
