Given the inexplicable nature of certain refereeing decisions in a number of high profile games over the course of this season has led to a degree of understandable consternation from fans and pundits alike, it was inevitable that the referee would become the focal point of disquiet and opprobrium. But even so……

Premier League Ennui
Barely two weeks into the new Premier League season and I appear to be largely disinterested already. Although I am of advancing years (they definitely speed up as you get older, that’s scientific fact) I am not of the opinion that everything was better in the ‘good old days’ when players were paid a pittance, played for one club throughout their career and retired to run a pub, having received a few hundred quid from their testimonial.
Tour Of Britain – 2012
There’s something a little surreal about a major sporting event passing by your front door in a housing development set back away from the major roads. Nonetheless, the Ipswich to Norwich leg of the Tour of Britain, Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish et al, did precisely that at around 10.20 on Sunday 9th September. Managed to get a few photos in the three seconds or so …
League One Play Off Final
I believe there was a play off final at Wembley last Saturday. I was in York so please don’t tell me the score……I’m sure if the unthinkable happened McCabe will now be telling us all that we will be making significant strides next season and challenging for automatic promotion, whilst simulataneously letting our best players leave and cutting the rug from under Danny Wilson’s feet. But, …
Trying To Stay Optimistic
As United snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it’s hard for any United fan to remain optimistic, especially as there was almost a sad inevitability about the results yesterday. It’s a hard old life supporting this club……leaving the Premier league under harsh circumstances on the last day of the season and now this.
League One and Then Where?
Can hardly bring myself to discuss this. Shambolic from the start of the season to the depressingly predictable conclusion.
League One Next?
Every time I post about the Blades it appears unremittingly pessimistic. Although this might fit well with the grump persona I appear to be adopting on the blog, I would be delighted to write with optimism about the short to medium term future of the team. But events do seem to be conspiring somewhat against me.
Micky Adams
Probably not a bad idea to pick a man with passion and commitment to replace Speed. After all, he doesn’t have much to work with! But then again, it could be showing a worrying lack of ambition, given the talent available at the moment.
Where now for the Blades?
A little surprised, but not dismayed, to see the departure of Kevin Blackwell from SUFC after only two league games of the new season. Managing the club in the current climate is not easy, but Blackwell’s tactical acumen was, to use a technical term, pants! However, I have downgraded “stupidly optimistic” re: the season to a more realistic “mid table mediocrity”, especially if we take …
A Real Sport….
Managed to catch the London triathlon on TV yesterday – what an excellent antidote to the nonsense that is Formula 1. The triathlon was all about individual competitors pushing themselves to the limit (and in Alistair Brownlee’s case a little beyond). No team orders, no large scale business interests, just, honest world class competitive sport.
Murray and the Slams (Part Two)!
Have to feel for Murray at Wimbledon – incredible expectation, especially after England’s woeful exit from the World Cup, and always two of the potentially all time greats to overcome. Certainly didn’t go out with the whimper that betrayed the true worth of our footballing heroes.
So it’s all down to the Italian then…
England once again under perform at a major championship and the inquests and the recriminations begin. Almost churlish to add to the despondency but it is the British way!
Already the calls are out for Capello to be removed from office. As if that’s the major problem.
