Lived less than 20 miles from the Mercury theatre in Colchester since 1996 and finally got round to visiting! Well, it might have taken 14 years but at least we went twice in the space of 10 days or so…
Inside Job was the first of the two visits. A comedic thriller by Brian Clemens (he of Avengers theme), and a three hander. Somewhat old fashioned, it was still a good night out, although Denise did guess the ‘surprise’ ending; sadly, yours truly wasn’t quite as sharp!
The Blues Band played there last night. Still going strong after 30 odd years and still a beacon for the blues. Fronted by Paul Jones (still a great vocalist and showman, not to mention a not too shabby harmonica player), the band includes his old Manfred mucker Tom McGuinness and the excellent guitarist and vocalist Dave Kelly. Because they always make a gig fun, it’s easy to forget the effortless quality and the deep love they all have for the blues. McGuinness never tires of telling his ‘Big Boy’ Crudup story – and we never tire of hearing it because his love and respect for the man and his music is so obviously heartfelt.
Oh, and did I mention the musicianship. McGuinness is an excellent guitarist (not bad vocals either) and Dave Kelly must be one of the best slide and finger picking guitarists around; and yes I do mean anywhere, not just in Britain. Round of applause too for the rock solid rhythm section of Gary Fletcher and Rob Townsend. Even if you’ve only ever given the blues a cursory listen, if you get the chance to see them live then give them a try.
Finally, a plug for the only real blues show on mainstream radio – Paul Jones, 7.00pm, Monday nights, Radio 2. Usually excellent.
