Not long back from a break around the Med and Adriatic, stating with a couple of days in Rome. Managed to get “inside” a few of the places we have missed on previous visits…
Finally visited the Colosseum and Roman Forum, rather than just admiring from distance.
Visited Monte Carlo, La Spezia, Pisa, Corfu, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice. The considered opinion before we set off was that Pisa was little more than the Leaning Tower. Have to disagree, we thought the town itself was delightful, a lovely place to spend a few relaxing hours. Pleasantly surprised by Monte Carlo, far more than a tax evader’s paradise.
Also thoroughly enjoyed Kotor, although we did get some pretty awful weather while we were there. Managed the trek up to the fortress in between the downpours. One slight drawback to its fine medieval town centre is the drainage facilities (or lack of). When it rains, it creates a lovely swimming pool effect throughout the normally enchanting streets and alleyways. So, if you aren’t prepared (we weren’t) and not wearing appropriate footwear, be prepared to get significantly damp!
Venice was as lovely as always, and this time we managed to get into and up the Basilica – Denise has never really forgiven me for getting the timings wrong last time and getting back there too late to get in. So, that’s one black mark (of which there are many) removed from the list. Now back home for a rest….
