Roger McGough and Little Machine

Bit late on this as we actually took a chance on Sunday with a fairly late booking. As is often the case in such circumstances, very much worth the effort as we ventured to the New Wolsey or the first time in many an age.

Little Machine  began proceedings, a three-piece band who specialise in setting classic poetry to contemporary music.  Performing on their own at first, they take the words of the giants of poetry, project them onto a screen and have fun with the music. Inspiring and Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’ was decidedly and unashamedly Prog Rock.

With Roger McGough and his considerable repertoire in full flight, the show (reading?) made for a fast-paced evening of verse which seemed to have all bases covered from the serious to the silly. For some a lovely trip down memory lane, whilst for others (like me) a chance to hear his poetry in an innovative and entertaining manner. And the evening completed with a welcome, audience participating version of ‘Lily the Pink’. Excellent and unexpected stuff.
