As I ventured into Ipswich on one of my ever decreasing forays into the town, it dawned on me that I have grown increasingly disenchanted with the county town of Suffolk. I don’t know whether it’s my slowly decreasing tolerance levels towards mediocrity or whether the town is simply howling “shitty” to the Ipswich faithful but there is little except the odd errand to justify the bus ride in – thank you at least for the old codger bus pass.
So here we have four photos from the corner of the town we can still claim to have a little merit. Christchurch Mansion is one of Suffolk’s most treasured buildings, a beautiful Tudor mansion and the jewel in the crown of Ipswich’s historic past, boasting over 500 years of history. Sadly, a planned visit was aborted as it turned out to be closed on Mondays, which is clearly no-one’s fault but mine. But the building, along with the adjoining St. Margaret’s Church and the advantage of a fine independent coffee shop in the shape of the Green Room, all offer an oasis of calm and a glimpse of what was once in the centre of town. Most of the rest of the town conurbation…..not so much!!!
